PARENT-CHILD INTERACTION THERAPY (PCIT)
Parent Child Interaction Training (PCIT) is an evidence-based, short-term treatment designed to help young children with highly disruptive behavior learn to control their frustration. In PCIT, Dr. Gallahue works with each parent or caregiver to strengthen their relationship with their child and build their confidence and ability to effectively guide and direct their child’s behavior, set limits, calmly discipline, and restore positive feelings to their interactions. PCIT treats the caregiver, the child and most importantly their interactions. Families change one interaction at a time!
PCIT treatment has two phases:
Child-Directed Interaction (CDI) & Parent-Directed Interaction (PDI).
CDI Phase
|
PDI Phase
|
During the relationship or CDI phase, Dr. Gallahue helps caregivers become incredibly good reinforcers – teaching them the best ways to use their attention as a positive reinforcer for desired behaviors in an effort to increase them, as well as the appropriate times and ways to ignore minor disruptive or inappropriate behaviors in an effort to decrease them. After mastering these skills she moves on to the discipline or PDI phase.
|
The discipline or PDI phase builds on, or scaffolds on, the skills caregivers learn in the CDI phase and teaches the child how to obey more and behave better. Dr. Gallahue starts by practicing obeying and good frustration tolerance in the child's controlled home setting and then assists parents in rolling out the gains to other settings. She is with caregivers every step of the way with live coaching so that each and every session is a guaranteed success.
